Volunteer Highlight: Affiliates Are Demanding Better in November
Pancreatic Cancer Awareness Month is in full effect and affiliates across the country are working hard to raise the profile of pancreatic cancer.
Below are just a few fun highlights of what they’re doing to Wage Hope and Demand Better. For Patients. For Survival.
Region 1:
Denver Advocacy Chair Becky Morales is scoping out businesses near her home, work and gym. She is preparing simple packets with an introduction letter, the single page summary of the campaign and her contact information. She drops in her on the potential November community leader, introduces herself and asks for them to be a leader. As she leaves, she checks in on Facebook and adds a little note saying that she spoke with the business about the November Awareness Champion program for pancreatic cancer.
Region 2:
The Omaha Affiliate is painting rocks and hiding them around their community to spontaneously raise awareness. This is a phenomenon that has been popping up in communities around the country to raise awareness for breast cancer. Read more about it here.
Members of the Omaha Affiliate also delivered purple goody bags to local clinics, hospitals and research staff, to show their gratitude for all the ways they WAGE HOPE throughout the year.
The Minnesota Affiliate is hosting a PurpleLight event at Mall of America and hosting booths where guests can learn about actions they can take to raise awareness during the month of November.
Region 3:
The Central Florida Affiliate is up to a few things during November. They are making buildings turn purple, including the Amway Center (a large arena downtown for the Orlando Magic NBA team), the Orlando Eye and hopefully Florida Hospital located in downtown Orlando. Also, a local bank and other businesses in a local retirement community will be turning purple, as well.
Members of the affiliate will be setting up a table at a public event on Nov. 11 and walking around every hour in their purple to raise awareness and promote World Pancreatic Cancer Day.
Karen Sharkey, Joe DiBella and Nathan Burger are attending a third-party fundraiser on Nov. 5 called Lisa's Cornhole Tournament and will provide information about the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network.
Region 4:
Volunteers from the Delaware, New York and Philadelphia Affiliates will be in the “Good Morning America” audience on World Pancreatic Cancer Day. This has become a bit of a tradition for some of the Northeastern affiliates. Starting in 2013, each year volunteers from those areas have gotten up before the sunrise to stand outside in the audience of the “Today Show and Good Morning America.” Tune in on Nov. 16 and lookout for our purple people!
Region 5:
The Milwaukee Affiliate is working with local business Purple Door Ice Cream, which will designate a week in November where they will contribute $1 for every sundae purchased with Blackberry Quark Ice Cream. Yum!
They also have a number of buildings and landmarks turning purple and are working with a well-known hospital in the area to do a possible Facebook live. PurpleLight Milwaukee is on Nov. 12.
