Volunteer Highlight - Shannon Lee, Affiliate Chair, San Diego Affiliate
What moment has mattered the most to you during your volunteer journey?
The moment that matters most to me during my volunteer journey happens every year on PurpleStride San Diego. I love to sneak up on the stage during opening ceremonies and look out at the sea of purple. This brings tears of joy to my eyes every time. To see hundreds to thousands of people coming together all fighting for the same awareness of pancreatic cancer. Makes all the hard work worth every second.
What is your best piece of advice for new volunteers in leadership roles?
I think the best piece of advice I can offer to a new volunteer is to always remember you're never alone in this journey. Also, you are always helping make a difference even when it doesn't feel like you are.
Why did you want to volunteer with PanCAN?
After attending PurpleLight San Diego in 2016 after my Mama was diagnosed and seeing what the event was about and how it brought a community together in such a beautiful way, I knew I needed to be a part of this family and that I too could help make a difference in this fight.
What do you love about your role and/or your affiliate?
There isn't just one thing that I love about our affiliate in San Diego. But above everything we are a family and we are all very passionate about wanting to help make a difference in the fight for pancreatic cancer. We work well together to try and make each event the best it can be to bring as much awareness as possible to the need for a cure for this disease. Also, even during a pandemic this year and PurpleStride being virtual, our community raised nearly $60,000 over our goal.
What is your favorite thing to do in your free time?
In my free time I love to spend it camping with my husband, friends, family and two fur babies Toby and Katie.
