Volunteer Highlight - Raleigh-Durham Affiliate

What one thing is your affiliate working on that is exciting you or that you would like to share with your fellow volunteer leaders in other affiliates?

When our affiliate was founded in 2003, we could only dream of a day like our first PurpleStride.

In 2010 under Carolina blue skies, 800 purple shirts ran and walked through the streets of Raleigh. This year we anticipate 2,000-plus shirts to be seen. To date, our affiliate has raised over $2 million through PurpleStride, money that is vital in our battle against this deadly disease. Although we have participated in the growth of PurpleStride, the community awareness, friendships and satisfaction that come from each Stride cannot be underestimated. We continue to be tremendous advocates for PanCAN and the fight against pancreatic cancer.

Since that first PurpleStride, we continue to dream. We dream of the day when we hear the words, “a cure has been found.”  We know that day will come because we know that dreams really do come true.
We wish all of our fellow volunteer leaders much success in their activities, plans and “dreams.”

What do you love about your affiliate?

Our affiliate was founded on sorrow and has become one of inspiration and hope.

How would you describe your PanCAN volunteer community?

Our volunteers are a diverse group of extremely dedicated advocates for PanCAN and pancreatic cancer. They are survivors, researchers and caregivers, many who have lost loved ones, and some who have not been directly affected by pancreatic cancer. We cannot emphasize enough how well and for so long that our volunteers have worked together. Through giving of their time and talents many lifelong friendships have been made. We recently welcomed some new volunteers and are delighted that they are involved in our affiliate.

What would people be most surprise to know about your Affiliate?

The Raleigh-Durham affiliate (originally Team Hope North Carolina) of the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network was founded 18 years ago.  The original core group and many volunteers are still active with the affiliate.
