Message From The Volunteer Advisory Council

Volunteers Have Heart!

The purpose of life, after all, is to live it – to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer and richer experiences. Volunteers do not necessarily have the time; they just have the heart! According to author DeAnn Hollis, “The heart of a volunteer is never measured in size, but by the depth of the commitment to make a difference in the lives of others.”

Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place. Even helping with the smallest tasks can make a real difference to organizations in need.

Volunteering provides many benefits to both mental and physical health. Stress, depression, and anger can have negative effects on the body. The opposite emotions and mindset – satisfaction and optimism – are closely linked to a sense of purpose. Volunteering can provide a healthy boost to your self-confidence, self-esteem, and life satisfaction.

Volunteering may help combat depression by reducing social isolation. Volunteering keeps you in regular contact with others and helps you develop a solid support system that you can lean on during challenging times.

When it comes to volunteering, passion and positivity are the only requirements while learning new skills. Remember, the most valuable skills you can bring to any volunteer effort are compassion, an open mind, a willingness to do whatever is needed, and a positive attitude. After all, volunteers have heart!

You can explore a wide range of volunteer opportunities through PanCAN and your local affiliate; we offer many ways to give back to your community and your health!
