Message From The Volunteer Advisory Council
The Volunteer Advisory Council (VAC) is a group of PanCAN volunteers who provide feedback and advice to the Community Engagement team with regard to the Community Engagement program, volunteer affiliate network and other initiatives of the organization. Most importantly, we are the voice of the volunteers and affiliates. It is among our responsibilities to be a role model demonstrating the PanCAN volunteer core values: Passion, Integrity, Compassion and HOPE.
Being a VAC member is a three-year term commitment. Our responsibilities include collaborating and partnering with staff and fellow VAC members in a constructive and respectful manner that welcomes diverse viewpoints and decision-making styles. VAC members participate in monthly meetings and working groups to discuss and provide feedback from a volunteer standpoint to help guide decision making at a national level. This is in addition to our local affiliate engagement.
Each of us has held various affiliate roles, giving us a reference for what is important for affiliate volunteers. We share the successes and struggles. All of us are still active within our local affiliates. We are proud to be PanCAN PurpleStride Team Captains, celebrating and honoring our loved ones with our team members. Being a PanCAN PurpleStride Grand Club member is also something we have in common. Along with each of you, we raise awareness, are proud advocates and use our time, talent, and passion to move the PanCAN mission forward.
It is important to represent all regions across the country, therefore one of our responsibilities is to have a strong connection to affiliate leadership for learning about successes and struggles within affiliate groups. The VAC is here to listen and learn so we not only support but share creative ideas with others. The more affiliates connect and network, the more impactful our volunteer base will be.
Helen Dillen and Janice Griffin are the current Co-Chairs for the VAC. This is also a three-year term. In addition to assisting in preparing agendas and presenting at our monthly meetings, we have bi-weekly calls with the Community Engagement staff. We have specific leadership commitments and responsibilities. When possible, we attend PurpleStride planning meetings, Affiliate Chair calls, and volunteer trainings. We support the VAC and affiliates to strive and successfully achieve PanCAN’s goals.
Our newest VAC members are:
Joelle Hervis – Broward-Palm Beach and Sue Popik – San Francisco (8-year survivor)
Our other VAC Leadership team include:
Angeli Bateman, Mimi Leonard, Jeanne Lipshetz, Tripp Razor, Bruce Platt, Jann Skelton, and Wendy Stoneberg.
Just like you, our amazing PanCAN volunteers across the US, we are all volunteers with families, careers, hobbies, busy lives, but we had a passion for changing the future of pancreatic cancer for patients and their families.
We are proud to represent ALL PanCAN volunteers. Thank you!
