Message from the Volunteer Advisory Council

At a recent Town Hall meeting, PanCAN President and CEO Julie Fleshman addressed some changes taking place at PanCAN, explained the reasons for them, and outlined the path going forward. Processing all this led me to think about the nature of change itself. And here is what I realized:

Change is hard. Change is inevitable. Change is good.

Change is hard. Change challenges our comfort zones, disrupts our routines, and forces us to confront uncertainties. Whatever the reason – a new job, a new house, an unexpected life event – change can evoke feelings of anxiety and resistance. Even small shifts in our routine can disrupt our comfort and create uncertainty. We naturally resist what is unfamiliar, preferring the security of the known. This reluctance is a fundamental part of human nature, as change often requires us to confront fears and uncertainties about the future.

But the (sometimes uncomfortable) reality is that change is inevitable. Life is a dynamic process characterized by constant evolution. From the cycles of nature to the progression of technology, everything around us is in a constant state of flux. Attempting to resist this natural flow can lead to stagnation, hindering our personal growth and development. By contrast, embracing change allows us to discover new strengths and expand our horizons, fostering resilience and adaptability. And accepting that change is a constant allows us to navigate transitions more effectively, since the ability to adapt to new circumstances is crucial for our mental and emotional well-being.

Perhaps most importantly, change is good. While the initial stages may be uncomfortable, change often paves the way for new opportunities and growth. Embracing change fosters resilience and adaptability, better equipping us to handle future challenges with strength and agility.

Change can also inspire innovation and creativity. In both our personal and professional worlds, the ability to adapt to new circumstances is vital for success. Companies that resist change often find themselves outpaced by more agile competitors. As for individuals, the process of adapting to change – admittedly, often difficult – can teach us valuable lessons about perseverance and self-discovery. All of this is to say that while change may initially feel daunting, it is an essential part of our personal journeys, driving growth and innovation.

In an ever-evolving world, the ability to adapt and thrive amidst change is not just important; it is essential for a fulfilling and successful life. By embracing change rather than resisting it, we open ourselves to new possibilities and opportunities. Ultimately, change is a vital force that propels us forward, reminding us that every transition, no matter how challenging, holds the potential for profound growth and new beginnings. Rather than fearing change, we should welcome it as an essential component of growth and evolution.

So, here’s to PanCAN and new beginnings. May we go from strength to strength as we continue to wage hope and create a world in which everyone affected by pancreatic cancer will thrive.
