Volunteer Highlight: Grace Lynch, PurpleStride Chair, Charlotte Affiliate
Are you originally from the Charlotte area?
I am originally from Augusta Georgia, and have lived in Charlotte since 1998.
What is your profession?
I am a Children's Discipleship Coordinator for my church.I work with inner-city and at-risk youth.
How long have you been involved with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network, and what is your connection to the disease?
I have been involved since 2012.
My niece, Carmen, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2001. She was only 27 years old at the time of her diagnosis. She died after a brave four-month battle with the disease. I grew up with four older brothers, and since she was two years younger than I, she was like a sister to me.
Please tell me about your involvement with the Charlotte affiliate?
I decided to start running for exercise in 2012 and wanted to participate in a 5K. After a few weeks of training, I decided to see if there were any 5Ks that were tied to a charity. The first idea that popped in my head was the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I could not believe it when I realized that the organization was hosting its first PurpleStride in Charlotte that year. It was being held on the day before what would have been Carmen's birthday.
After the PurpleStride, I knew I wanted to be more involved. I started attending the affiliate meetings and each year I found myself being more involved in PurpleStride. Earlier this year I was asked to be PurpleStride Chair. I had the privilege and honor of leading PurpleStride Charlotte 2015!
What are some things you enjoy in your personal life?
My two daughters are my world. They are the greatest gift I could have ever asked for and as hard as motherhood is, I wouldn't trade it for anything. I can't really say I love running, but I love the feeling of accomplishment when I'm finished! I've been blessed to be able to run some very fun races, from 5Ks to marathons. Also, I consider myself a fairly good baker. I enjoy bringing smiles to people with my birthday cakes and wedding cakes!
What are some highlights of your involvement with our organization?
I have such pride in my involvement with the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network. I am a part of the most amazing affiliate. The support I've received from our national office has been stellar. While I hate what brings us together, I know that we are all fighting for the same cause, and we all bring our strengths to the team to fight! While I only have one PurpleStride under my belt as the Chair, it was such a great experience for me! I've learned so much this year, and was lucky enough to meet some great people in the process. We exceeded our goal of $215,000 by raising over $266,000. I'm simply honored to have been a part of the event.
